US HPC and exascale strategies

It has been a busy summer for HPC in the US government. The Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration have moved forward with their plan to deploy an exascale system by 2023, and president Obama has signed an executive order creating a National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI) with much broader scope, including the arenas of: space and aeronautics, security, health, and weather/climate (see below).

Three agencies will lead the NSCI: the Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Defense (DOD), and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The order also named two R&D agencies – the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The five deployment agencies are  identified as: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

It will be an exciting time leading up to 2020, and into that decade for sure.
